Policy-orientated security research can only be as good as the data on which it is based. Unfortunately for scholars in the field of terrorism studies, getting access to reliable empirical sources, such as government archives and interviews with (former) terrorists, has been a long-standing challenge. The good news is that the last couple of years have seen some important improvements in this regard that have opened up exciting new avenues for research on terrorism.

This ICCT seminar brought together international researchers who are at the forefront of conducting ground-breaking empirical studies. The experts have extensive research experience in  two influential terrorism-cases: The Australian Pendennis case and the Dutch Hofstad group. Their work has a strong emphasis on gaining a better understanding of the causes and precipitating dynamics of home-grown (jihadist) terrorism. It also focuses on best practices and identifying promising new approaches for preventing and containing terrorism.

During this seminar, Mr. Bruce McFarlane (Monash University Melbourne) discussed new avenues for empirical research on home-grown terrorism available in Australia. Mr. Bart Schuurman (Centre for Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism, Leiden University) and ICCT Research Fellow Dr. Quirine Eijkman explored how empirical data was crucial in shedding new light on the case of the Hofstadgroup in the Netherlands. The presentations were followed with discussions by Dr. Lindsay Clutterbuck (RAND Corporation) and Mr. Petter Nesser (Norwegian Defence Research Establishment FFI), respectively. The audience had the opportunity to discover key issues in more detail during  a question-and-answer session.
