On September 2, 2021, the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT) hosted an online Live Briefing about rethinking our approach to countering violent extremism. View the recording of the Live Briefing below:

In today’s world, considerable emphasis is placed on Countering Violent Extremism (CVE), especially in the context of Islamist radicalization since the event of 9/11. However, much of this programming is state-centric and top-down and presupposes that radicalisation and extremism are primarily driven by ideology.

In his new book, Abbas argues that CVE should be about empowerment, resistance, integration, opportunity, and participation in society without the need to call these initiatives an issue of de-radicalisation, etc. Current CVE practices, embedding racism, discrimination and Islamophobia, risk making matters worse. The growing threat of the far-right poses an additional challenge.
