On 9 March, 2022, 15:00 - 16:00, the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism and the Center for Research on Extremism (C-REX) hosted a Live Webinar as part of The Global Perspectives on the Far Right webinar series, to a great degree inspired by the new Manchester University Press book series, ‘Global Studies of the Far Right,’ co-edited and co-founded by Eviane Leidig, ICCT Associate Fellow for Current and Emerging Threats. The webinar discusses the rise of Romanian far-right party Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Combining the approaches of fascist Iron Guard movements from the 1930s as well as transnational modern far-right movments, AUR was propelled into becoming the second most popular party according to polls. Ionut Chiruta looks into the strategies used by AUR such as protest strategies, PR stunts and diaspora mobilization which have helped them gain popularity.
