Aileen van Leeuwen
Aileen van Leeuwen joined the ICCT as M&E Officer and Junior Research Fellow in October 2022. Her focus is on the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) component of counter-terrorism (CT) and preventing/countering violent extremism (P/CVE) interventions, strategies and policies.
In this position, Aileen combines her thematic knowledge on CT and P/CVE and the M&E experience she gained at various international NGOs. Aileen previously worked for the exiled, Sudanese media house Dabanga and the Dialogue Advisory Group, an organisation that facilitates political dialogue between actors in conflict to reduce violence. Additionally, she founded the start-up Acume and the international photography project Portraits for People. During her studies, she also interned at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Dutch Council for Refugees.
Aileen holds an MA in Conflict Studies and Human Rights and a BSc in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences (cum laude) from Utrecht University. As part of her studies, she completed an exchange programme at the University of Hong Kong and conducted field research on the reintegration process of ex-paramilitaries in Medellín, Colombia. Both her MA and BSc theses were published in renowned (student) journals. Her research interests include M&E, CT, P/CVE, radicalisation, polarisation, reintegration, conflict analysis and conflict resolution.
