ICCT Research Fellow Edwin Bakker on Pauw

October 19, 2016

On 18 October 2016, ICCT Research Fellow Prof. Dr. Edwin Bakker joined the Dutch talkshow Pauw, discussing the battle of Mosul and the wider ramifications of the fight against the so-called Islamic State (IS).

In the conversation, Prof. Bakker argues that returning foreign fighters may soon present a more urgent threat, especially those who will move to other places than their countries of origin. It is worrisome, Bakker remarks, that there is no possibility of thoroughly checking the backgrounds of the many people arriving in Europe as refugees, as those with malicious intentions can hide among the many others seeking asylum. With regard to the fight against IS and the battle of Mosul, he thus concludes that while it is cynical to sit by and do nothing, we should be aware that taking action, or supporting other parties in doing so, will have consequences for the West.
