Tanya Mehra was recently featured in an article for the De Volksrant on the proposed ban on expressing support for terrorist organisations. She questions the law's premise, pointing out that similar legislation in the UK and France has not reduced the terrorist threat but has instead fueled discussion and polarisation. She warns that the bill increasingly detaches criminal liability from actual violence and moves toward criminalising extreme ideas, restricting freedom of expression and the right to protest peacefully. Her view is that online radicalisation is better tackled by regulating platforms and engaging with parents and schools, and by enforcing existing laws on incitement and hate speech more sharply. She also calls on political parties to look at themselves, noting that racist conspiracy theories voiced openly by some politicians help normalise far-right extremist thinking.
