Jannis Jost, M.Litt., is a research associate in the Department of Terrorism and Radicalization Research at the Institute for Security Policy at Kiel University (ISPK). He works on in-depth analyses of terrorist radicalization and the relationship between terrorist groups and their surrounding environment. At the same time, he follows current developments of terrorism and counter-terrorism, both in Europe and abroad. By way of research projects, publications, lectures, and interviews, he tries to advance our understanding of the phenomenon of terrorism and to contribute to an informed public discourse on security policy.
Since 2020, he has been the coordinator of the collaborative research projects ERAME and ERAME-REX, funded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (FKZ 13N15481 and 13N16469). With his colleagues from Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems (IAIS) and Centre for Security and Society at Freiburg University (CSS), they are combining social science, informatics and legal expertise with the goal of testing and advancing the potential of Artificial Intelligence for detecting and monitoring extremist radicalization in textual social media post.
In 2022, he published the first German-language handbook on Terrorism Studies, together with his co-editors Liane Rothenberger, Joachim Krause and Kira Frankenthal. The handbook contains 70 chapters by 94 authors from over 30 different academic backgrounds. It covers all important aspects of modern Terrorism Studies, from phenomenological analyses, to radicalizations studies, effects of and responses to terrorism, to methodological and ethical considerations of the research on terrorism.
