On 7 February 2017, ICCT Research Fellow Prof. Edwin Bakker was featured in the article "A file on Islamic State’s ‘problem’ foreign fighters shows some are refusing to fight", published in The Washington Post. In the article, Bakker argues that while fighters from Western European countries are largely known to intelligence agencies, less information is available on those from countries such as Bosnia and Kosovo. However, while the possibility of fighters returning home to stage attacks on the continent remains, it should not be exaggerated - many fighters, argues Bakker, had gone to "live there and die there".
