ICCT Foreign Fighters Report in Time Magazine

September 29, 2016

A Time Magazine article of 15 September 2016 examines the position of mothers and their unique role as actors who can help prevent the radicalisation of children and young adults. By developing the course "Mothers School", Austrian sociologist Edit Schlaffer is providing women with the tools and knowledge that can assist in identifying signs of radicalisation. Her course was piloted in Tajikistan and then rolled out to Pakistan, India, Indonesia and sub-Saharan Africa. The article notes that while Schlaffer never anticipated doing the same work in Europe, data referenced from the ICCT Report on Foreign Fighters in the EU indicates the issue of radicalisation is a growing concern throughout the European continent as well. As such, the courses are expanding to an increasing number of countries and even seek to include the development of a "Fathers School".
