The Need for More & Structural Data Analysis in Detention and Rehabilitation of Extremist Offenders

Over the past years, the de-radicalisation and re-integration of convicted extremist offenders has become one of the most rapidly developing areas in the domain of countering violent extremism. Nevertheless, our current understanding of detention and rehabilitation is sub-optimal, as Tinka Veldhuis and Eelco Kessels argue in this Research Paper. The authors find that gaps exist in our knowledge and that crucial questions remain, which require answering before policies geared to deal with extremist prisoners can be truly optimised. Using examples, the two authors describe a number of challenges and obstacles concerning data gathering and analysis in the prison context and draw conclusions for the way forward. The authors suggest that increased and structural data analysis is essential to produce evidence-based policies that are tailored to the problem and geared to an effective solution.
